Visionary Supervisor Spotlight: Chris Campassi

We are all about celebrating amazing mental health leaders and clinical supervisors, with plans to highlight one visionary supervisor each month!

This month’s spotlight is: Chris Campassi, LPC, ACS

You are really making a name for yourself in the clinical supervision world! What types of supervision do you offer and to whom?

I offer both individual and group supervision and consultation, as well as sup of sup. Because I am an LPC, I am limited to only providing pre-license supervision to LPCs in CO, but I offer consultation to all licenses, assuming the consultee feels that I am a good fit for them and can provide beneficial consultation.

What makes you a visionary in supervision?

I have never thought of myself as a visionary so to speak, but I do think I offer a unique approach to supervision. While it is very important that I help my supervisees adhere to regulatory expectations and an ethical code, my approach is to really focus on the developmental needs of the supervisee, creating a true parallel process, one in which the supervisee gets to “experience” what they want their clients to experience, rather than trying to “learn how” to create that experience for the client. I really believe that a supported supervisee will be able to navigate their own barriers and come up with their own solutions, if given the space and safety to take risks and try new approaches, much the way we want to provide that space and safety to clients. I work from a psychoanalytic approach, so I do not offer a lot of techniques or direct feedback on what to do with a specific client. Rather, I challenge the supervisee to work through cases, using their own intuition, theoretical orientation and style, while offering some alternative perspectives and curiosities I might have if I were working with the same client.

What is your favorite thing about providing clinical supervision?

I love working with people who love to learn and challenge themselves to become better people and therapists. I find that interns and pre-licensed therapists in particular are very motivated, enthusiastic and curious in a way that I find very stimulating and gratifying.

It sounds like supervisees would be lucky to work with you! Where can people find you to learn more?
